Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is a lovely seaside resort in the County of Dorset close to the Devon border.  Traditionally a fishing port, it’s a town with a rich history surrounded by sublime countryside and makes the perfect base for a family holiday.

Lyme Regis is in the heart of the Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site stretching for 95 miles from East Devon to Dorset.  This coastline gives a glimpse of over 185 million years of history with its abundance of fossils.

The town itself is small and perfectly formed with its most famous feature being the iconic Cobb, famously depicted in the film ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’.  Built around the river Lym, the old town dates back to the 14th century.  It’s a splendid place to spend some time wandering about visiting some of the lovely cafes, shops and art galleries.

Other attractions in the town include a cinema, theatre and museum.  There’s also a busy programme of events which run all year round including the Lyme Regis Regatta & Carnival week in August.  There’s also the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival (in conjunction with the London Natural History Museum) in early May.

If it’s a bit of sun-lounging you’re after Lyme regis has a lovely award-winning sandy beach which is perfect for the kids.  There’s alos plenty of watersports if you’re feeling a bit more active.

In the surrounding area there are plenty of attractions to explore including the famous South West Coastal Path which runs the entire length of the South west Peninsula.

All in all it adds up to a great holiday location!
